Alexander V. Neimark, Peter I. Ravikovitch, Aleksey Vishnyakov Center for Modeling and Characterization of Nanoporous Materials TRI/Princeton, 601 Prospect Avenue, Princeton, NJ 08542, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We present new results on MC simulations and Density Functional Theory modeling of sorption and phase transitions in nanopores. Major attention is paid to the problems of metastability and hysteresis. It is shown that the construction of the full phase diagram, tracing continuously stable, metastable, and unstable states, sheds light on the peculiarities of equilibrium and spontaneous transitions. The proposed methods allow one to predict the adsorption isotherm, the pressure of equilibrium vapor-liquid transition, and the limits of adsorption hysteresis. Simulation and theoretical results are found to be in agreement with reference adsorption measurements.

Density functional theories and molecular simulations of adsorption and phase transitions in nanopores.
The nonlocal density functional theory (NLDFT) of confined fluids is tested against Monte Carlo simulations by using the example of Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid sorption in slit-shaped and cylindrical nanopores ranging from 0.3 to 10 nm in width. The fluid-fluid and solid-fluid parameters of the LJ potentials were chosen to represent several experimentally important adsorption systems: nitrogen and...
متن کاملAdsorption hysteresis in nanopores
Capillary condensation hysteresis in nanopores is studied by Monte Carlo simulations and the nonlocal density functional theory. Comparing the theoretical results with the experimental data on low temperature sorption of nitrogen and argon in cylindrical channels of mesoporous siliceous molecular sieves of MCM-41 type, we have revealed four qualitatively different sorption regimes depending on ...

Dimethyldodecylamine-N-oxide (DDAO) has only one polar atom that is able to interact with water. Still, this surfactant shows very hydrophilic properties: in mixtures with water, it forms normal liquid crystalline phases and micelles. Moreover, there is data in the literature indicating that the hydration of this surfactant is driven by enthalpy while other studies show that hydration of surfac...
متن کاملPhase Behavior and Adsorption of Pure Substances and Mixtures and Characterization in Nanopore Structures by Density Functional Theory
Phase behavior in shale remains a mystery because of various complexities and effects. One complexity is from nanopores, in which phase behavior is significantly affected by the interaction between the pore surfaces and fluid molecules. The result is the heterogeneous distribution of molecules that cannot be described by bulk-phase thermodynamic approaches. Statistical thermodynamic methods can...
متن کاملGeometric Effects on Nanopore Creation in Graphene and on the Impact-withstanding Efficiency of Graphene Nanosheets
Abstract Single- and multilayer graphene sheets (MLGSs) are projectile-resisting materials that can be bombarded by nanoparticles to produce graphene sheets of various sizes and distributions of nanopores. These sheets are used in a variety of applications, including DNA sequencing, water desalination, and phase separation. Here, the impact-withstanding efficiency of graphene nanosheets and the...
